Our Stance: Vote AGAINST the Constitutional Amendments
As a nonpartisan nonprofit, Justice United can legally take a stance on ballot amendments, since they are considered nonpartisan. Learn more about the the property tax limit would barely benefit the average tax-payer, give massive tax breaks to large corporations and the wealthiest residents -- and gut essential resources.
The levy limit is the third Constitutional Amendment (on the back side of most ballots), with this description: "Constitutional amendment requiring limits on property tax increases by local governments." It sounds helpful, but is mainly a corporate tax giveaway. For example, a 1-cent reduction in property taxes statewide would save Duke Energy $3.2 million, while the typical homeowner would save just $33.30. By losing that property tax income, local governments would lose funds for affordable housing, schools, emergency services, basic infrastructure, libraries, and much more. These amendments would greatly weaken Justice United's ability to organize for increased public funds to address the affordable housing crisis.
