It's important to understand how the amendments on the ballot would not provide meaningful property tax relief or property tax justice. Instead, they are projected to cut already-underfunded essential services, such as public schools, affordable housing funds, and emergency services.
The average homeowner in Orange County would benefit $45.95 (for a 1-cent reduction/prevention), while Duke Energy would benefit $3.2 million. We are committed to property tax justice, but this amendment is not it! *Remember to flip your ballot over to find all the amendments.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Justice United cannot endorse candidates for government office or political parties -- but we are legally allowed to take a stand on ballot amendments. In particular, the property tax amendment threatens all of Justice United's priorities: affordable housing, healthcare, immigrant rights and well-being, and public education.
Meanwhile, Justice United will continue taking action for equity in property assessments and strengthening meaningful local and state property tax relief programs. That's where the real change needs to happen. We must adequately fund essential services, prevent the tax burden from falling unfairly on low-to-moderate income households, and ensure that the wealthiest pay their fair share.
